IT’S TIME FOR ANOTHER MIKE D. REPORT FROM
Once again, Mike is checking in with us here at Newcomers Whisky Club with a whisky report direct from the vast wastelands of Perth, Western Australia!
Mike, the stage is yours!
This release is an independent bottling of a single cask Bowmore 11 year old bottled by Hart Brothers. Hart Brothers is a Glasgow-based whisky blender and independent bottler who release only single cask whiskies bottled at 46% abv and without chill-filtration or added coloring.
As a die-hard Peat Fan and lover of Islay whiskies, I was very excited to crack this one open and see what it was like, and after tasting this one I have to say that this is quite different from either the official release 10 or 12 year old and certainly lots different from the new NAS releases.
About Hart Brothers:
“Hart Brothers can trace their origins in the licensed trade back to the late 19th century when the family were licensed victualers and publicans in Paisley, the mill town on the outskirts of Glasgow. However, it was not until 1964 that brothers Iain & Donald Hart incorporated the company as Wine & Spirit Wholesalers and Scotch Whisky Blenders.
Alistair Hart joined the company in 1975 and it is his responsibility as chief blender to source vintage casks of single malt whisky which are not readily available through any specialist whisky shop or online whisky site. These rare malt whiskies are further matured and only are selected for single cask bottling after careful whisky tasting and consideration. To make sure our customers can best share with us this single malt scotch whisky experience, Hart Brothers adds nothing to the malt whisky other than the purest water.
Today, we pride ourselves on continuing the spirit of excellence by offering some of the finest single malt scotch whisky available through our selected distributors overseas and in the UK at our on line whisky shop.
Let the adventure begin. Enjoy.”
Single Malt Review: Hart Brothers Bowmore 11 yo
This bottle of Hart Brothers Bowmore 11 yo, was distilled in April 1997 and bottled in October 2008. There is no specific information on the label as to what type of cask was used, but from the color I believe this is an ex-Bourbon cask. If you’re interested, this particular bottle is available from Dan Murphy online shopping and is priced at AUD $50.00
Color: Light gold.
Nose: Smoky peat, fresh florals with citrus.
Palate: Lemon to vanilla malts, salty, white pepper and some fruitiness, melon(?)
Finish: Smoke, black tea and charcoal. Wet vegetation and sea salt.
Overall: This one is much better than either of the 10 or 12 year old official releases and I would highly recommend it as an addition to anyone’s cellar and especially at $50. I know that will be ordering more when I next visit Dan Murphy’s!
